Monday March 4
Today we are starting a ritual that I hope to continue
throughout our stay here. Because I am
in Europe I am not working the very early hours that I do in NB, I am still not
sure if I will work 9-5 or 10-6. Either
way I will start my day with a 1 hour walk.
Today we decide to walk the perimeter of the island we are
on. Unfortunately our plans change when
we come across the market about 3/4 way through our walk. I love this market. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and fresh
fish. No need to buy lots of groceries,
this market is here daily except Sundays, and is less than a 10 minute walk
from our apartment.

Back to work for 9AM today, a busy day so the morning flies
by. Andre went back to the market and
arrived back with lots of things to get us started. Fresh strawberries, that taste like
strawberries! Some things are extremely
inexpensive, I am looking forward to artichokes, but none for tonight. He bought these giant shrimp/mini lobster
that I love, already looking forward to supper. Andre says he did not take many picture, he was busy shopping, next time there will be more pictures.

Off for a walk at lunch again. Walked in and out of small streets, and
around the water. So nice being on and
Island, you can only get so lost. Popped
out of one of the side streets on the water no where near where we thought we
were. They are twisty some of the little
streets, easy to get mixed up. There are a couple of streets that are very easy
to remember, lots of high end stores and very wide. Then there is the market area. And the 2 main squares that we have found so
far. I will have this all sorted by the
time we leave. Tomorrow Andre is
planning on taking the train to a festival outside of town, I will not venture
into the little streets, I will walk the outside along the water only or I may
never get back!

After lunch the owner of the apartment comes by. We had not met her yet as she was away for
the week-end. She told us what she does
for a living, some kind of health thing that maybe involved walking on the week-end? Her English is OK, definitely a lot better
than our Italian. Got a few things
sorted, like where the 5 different types of garbage go on what days. I am all for recycling and looking after the
environment, but 5 different garbage cans in your small kitchen take up a lot
of room! Plus the kettle that Andre
burned his hand on today needs replacing, nice guy was trying to make me a cup
of tea. That kettle will not be plugged
in again, ouch. I was surprised to hear
that she and her husband lived here for a few years, this place is really not
very functional for full time living.
They moved when they had a child, can’t even imagine a child here, lots
of stairs, scary stairs that I will get Andre to take pictures of. Not sure Ron will make it to our terrace if
he still has vertigo, I nearly get it just walking up there.
After work we walk to the train station to get tickets to a
town that Andre wants to go visit a festival at tomorrow. When we get there we realize the train
station is right behind where we were dropped off by bus on Saturday, now we
are a little more oriented.

The harbour at night |
Stopped at a large grocery store on the way home, on the Island
we have a couple of shops that are smaller than the store in Barachois, so
limited choices to pick from.
Got home and Andre cooked the broccoli stems, one bite and
they all went into the garbage. They are
way too tough to eat, maybe we should have peeled them. We did have some new potatoes that were delicious.
But even better were these large shrimp/tiny lobster things that he got at the
market today. They were lots of work to
eat, but delicious. Not sure Andre
thought they were worth the effort to eat, we’ll see if they appear in the
fridge again back from the market.

Always fun navigating in the narrow streets in Europe without getting lost. Our GPS is not just for geocaching. We make various waypoints on it so that we can find our way back or find places we want to go back to, like the market, etc.
