Original
plans were to take a train to another city to visit today, but it was
raining when we woke up so decision made to just stay in Bari. The
rain did not last long, and it turned out to be a beautiful sunny
day, we should know by now that we should carry both umbrellas and
sunglasses at this time of year.
Our
morning walk took us back along the waterfront. There is a 15km walk
along the water, we did not go that far, just a little past the
ferris wheel that we walked to the other night to see what looked
like some parliament buildings. When we looked at a map later we
realized we were not too far from the beach, we should have continued
on a little further.
Coming
back from our walk we headed into the newer section of Bari. This
section is made up of streets like we have at home, square blocks,
not all the twisty streets narrow streets in old town. Like other
times we have stayed in old towns in Europe we have very little light
from outside, wonder if we would have liked to stay in this part of
the city instead of old town, but there is something special about
just stepping out your door into these little streets.
We
walked the new town streets until we met up with the pedestrian
street with all the high end shopping. At the end of the street is
also the main train station and bus station. Everything is quite
compact and easily walkable here. At the very end of the street
before you enter old town is a nice map in the pavement of old town.
Back
home for some lunch and a little rest. Yesterday we had picked up
some meats, cheese and olives to have with some wine for lunch.
Everything was delicious.
Rest
up after lunch and out we go again. This time we don't look at maps,
we just wander old town. We kept running into little streets we have
already been on so found our way around quite easily. Every now and
then you hit a dead end street, but there always seemed to be an
archway to go under somewhere and get sorted again. Lots more women
out selling their pasta outside their homes today, a couple more
making their pasta as well. Came across a huge lineup for gelato,
even Andre did not want to wait in the lineup. There are so many
people out walking the streets. Not sure if they are locals, or
visitors from other Italian villages, but everyone is pretty much
speaking Italian.
Back
home and Andre makes a delicious pasta dinner, then we head out again
to see the lights. It is busy on the streets, last night Andre said
it was all teenagers out, tonight it is a mix of everyone. We did
have gelato for dessert, but you pay before you get in line to order,
and so disappointed all out of chocolate to add to my pistachio.
Back
home for the night, hoping to explore somewhere else tomorrow.
