Capri Chairlift

 20,000 Steps

Today we said bye to Sorrento and hallo to Capri. We took a ferry which is only about 30 minutes over smooth waters. Wendy was happy it was not rough. So many tour groups getting on the ferry. We of course had luggage, I think we were the only ones with luggage, Capri is a very popular day trip from Sorrento. It was a little crazy trying to get on, next time we would just wait to get on last.

Once we reached Capri we found the bus ticket office and purchased all day bus tickets for around 8 Euro each. 2.4 euros one way if you but your ticket in advance or 2.8 euro on the bus. Our AIRBNB had sent us instructions on how to get to the apartment by bus, we debated walking, thank goodness we did not do that. We managed to get ourselves and all our stuff on to the bus, only very little buses here, the roads are just too narrow for big city buses.

Lucking the apartment was not rented last night so we were able to check in at 11am instead of later in the afternoon. Get our bearings on how to walk to the town of Capri up this very narrow walkway inside walls, it is not far but of course 50 steps up on the way there, a very steady incline for about 10 minutes.

Decide to take to bus to Anacapri. It is supposed to be not as nice tomorrow so take advantage of the beautiful day today to go to Anacapri where we took a chairlift to get panoramic views of the island. This is a single person chairlift, still funny being on a chairlift without skis on. From the top the views are absolutely amazing. It is a clear day so we can see over to Sorrento, the Amalfi coast, Mount Vesuvius, and Naples Bay and Naples in the background. Lots of ferries going back and forth from Sorrento and Naples. There are ferries that also go to towns on the Amalfi coast, but they are not so frequent.

Walked around Anacapri old town, grabbed a little take away lunch snack. There are a lot of places not yet open in Anacapri, but like everywhere else we have been we are so glad to be here off season. There is enough open for us, and still so many people milling around. The line up at the bus stop to get back to Capri (I know confusing, the town and the Island with the same name) was huge, and remember only little busses. We walked up the street another 2 blocks to a spot where only a few people were waiting. Felt bad when we got to the busy spot and could only load a couple of people. This is a trick we have used a few times now travelling through Europe, if you are willing to walk 15 minutes or less you can probably go backwards to the last stop which is less busy.

Transferred busses in Capri and went back down to Grand Marina. Checked out ferries for going to Naples in a couple of days and looked around for happy hour. No happy hour in Capri, but Spritz were a couple of Euros cheaper that 17Euro that they wanted on top of the chairlift earlier, they are still there. Decided happy hour would just be on our balcony, which has amazing views of the water. Forgot to mention we had a little surprise when we checked in, no living room. A kitchen with a kitchen table which opens up to the balcony with 2 small tables and 4 chairs, and 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. It is perfect for a couple of days, not sure I would love it for a long stay. But the views....

After exploring the marina area we took the bus back up to Capri to go to the grocery store. It is now 4 PM, and the store is closed. I know lots of stores here close in the afternoons for a couple of hours, but we are not sure of the exact times. I see people mopping inside, so we think that may be it for the day.

Try to find some water and wine from at least a little store, then figure we can just boil water in the apartment. Find wine at a little shop, pretty sure we paid restaurant prices.

Back to the apartment and we had brought some leftover pasta and sauce and have a good supper with our overly expensive wine. We were able to spend a bit of time on the balcony before it gets too cold. We actually have to turn on the heaters in the bedroom.

After supper a walk back up to Capri to see some live music that we had seen them setting up for this afternoon. Lots in the audience singing along, the only 2 words we knew were Mama Mia in one song. Stayed for a few tunes. It was definitely a local thing, lots of people seemed to know each other.

Back to the apartment, see a few people with grocery bags from the store we tried earlier, so obviously it opened up again. Maybe tomorrow we will hit the right time, but we may go out as well.

Off to bed early, no napping on a couch tonight!

Map of old town Anacapri, fun to walk around, not very busy. Lots of places not open. The grocery store closes from 2 to 4.

The church we saw from the chairlift, there was another church with great tilled floor but it was not open, c'est la vie being off season I guess.

Guessing somebody got a good inheritance. Nice to say thanks to you father for it

A house built by an American in the 1800s is now a museum, we passed on it
