L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Up today to catch a bus to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, about a 40 minute bus ride from Avignon. One of the things that caught my interest in visiting this town is it is I read it is the Venice of France. Well, that is a huge stretch, beside a canal that wraps around the town not much else is the same, though there is a pretty square with a clock tower and an impressive cathedral.

We started the day at the information centre and picked up a map to follow the water wheels. This town once had 70 water wheels along the canal, there are 14 left. Lots of tiny streets along the pathways to the different water wheels. The town is also known for it's antiques, but being Monday most shops were closed.

We had a nice lunch along the canal, loved may appetizer of soup and dessert of strawberries, but not so keen on my main of fish. Andre had sausage and potatoes, tuna tartar for a starter and his favourite of creme brule for dessert which was delicious. Rose wine is a big thing here so I opted for a glass of that from Provence, very good. Visited a couple of parks, then caught the bus back to Avignon and arrived home around 5PM.

After supper walked over to the bridge to get some views of the Papal Palace at night, we will go again another night when it is even darker. Checked out where we can get rent bikes, may try that tomorrow if it is not too windy.

This building reminded me of Quebec

The front entrance to the church

2 wheels in one shop

Hotel Dieu now municipal offices

The canal runs along the house and they have bridges to go in

This dead-end alley was in a U shape, being fixed up

Used to have a synagogue here a long time ago where the parking lot is.  They did a dig.

Loved the old architecture here

The dragon is sleeping

Lunch, Tuna tartare for me and mushroom soup for Wendy

You can guess who had what

An old mansion that is now a bank

Lots of antique shops in this town, it is famous for it.
They say a person trash is another person treasure, lots of treasures here

Somewhere to practice kayaking with poles like the Olympics

The house 2nd & 3rd floors overhang by about 1 foot held up by beams that are probably 100s of years old. I walked by fast

Another mansion at a small park

While waiting for the bus ride home

One section of the drive had lots of vineyards

After supper walk
Palias des Papes and the ramparts plus the Pont d'Avignon
