Carnoles to RoqueBrune-Cap-Martin hike

This morning started with a very early wake up alarm at 4AM for Joey to catch her cab at 4:30AM. We have also learned that Nice taxis have doubled their rate to the airport, so for 50.00 Euro Joey is on her way. We need to remind her that she only paid 1.70 Euro on the way here, so does kind of even out.

Back up to the apartment after going down to the taxi with her, a little trouble falling back to sleep but the next thing we know it is 8:30AM. Joey should be in Amsterdam by now.

We have decided on another walk along the seaside today. We will take the train to Carnoles and walk back to RoqueBrune-Cap-Martin. Our walk to the train station starts off with someone getting whistled off the tram tracks on his bike by the police, 135.00Euro fine for that we heard the police tell him, not sure if he got off with a warning or not.

Next we are about a couple of blocks away from the turn to the train station and Andre realizes he forgot his camera back at the apartment. Anyone that knows Andre on travels will find this hard to believe, his camera is pretty much attached around his neck. I asked him if he thought his cell would be OK for the day, he actually thought about that for about 10 seconds before he returned to the apartment. So an extra 1-2KM added to Andres walking for today. I continued along to the train station with the backpack and told him I would buy tickets. The ticket machines are so not user friendly that I was just finished buying them when he got to the train station, crazy. Because we have a pass we can only buy one ticket at a time, and because we are not going to a real touristy spot in Carnoles it is not in the default places to pick. Anyway tickets purchased and we are on our way.

Arrive in Carnoles in about 30 minute train ride, follow the signs to tourist information to get a map for the walk. We come across our first “gypsy” market in Carnoles, not sure exactly what they are called but ever since we have been coming to Europe we have heard them called “gypsy” markets. You can buy pretty much anything here. It is kinda like a travelling dollar store.

Map retrieved from Tourist Information and we are on our way. This is a much easier walk then we have done the last couple of times, and our legs and knees are very happy to not climb as many stairs. We do have pretty views of cities which we haven't really had on our last walks. To start we can see Menton in the distance, and later in the hike we have great views of Monaco. There are some fantastic mansions along the way, and beautiful views of the water. The colour of the water is fantastic, even prettier than the Caribbean.

Arrive at RoqueBrune-Cap-Martin just as a train is pulling in, so decide to skip visiting the town and jump on the train. We tried to quickly validate our tickets, not sure if it ever worked, but at least we had tickets. This is the first train we actually saw people checking for tickets, but they skipped our carriage, I think they were chasing after the 2 young guys that ran through our car earlier.

Decided to get off the train one stop before the main stop in Nice, we haven't seen much of this side yet. Things are much less expensive as we are farther away from the tourist section where we are staying. Picked up 2 sandwiches and a pain au chocolate at a little bakery for 6.50Euro, sandwiches around us are 6.00Euro each. Bonus was they were just putting baguettes in the oven so it was fun to see that.

Walking down from this stop we ended up at the port, again. Sat and watched the boats while we ate our sandwiches then wrapped around to the I Love Nice sign again. Cut through old town and picked up rotisserie chicken for supper. Finally time for a break at the apartment, then headed out to pick up salad fixings to add to our chicken.

Another great day, one more nice day here tomorrow and then rain in the forecast again. A long walk planned for tomorrow, I will be happy to see the rain and have to stay home.

Today steps 23,000 or 14.5 km, a few more for Andre as he backtracked to get his camera.

Waiting for the train
