Lazaret Cave in Nice

With rain in the forecast for this afternoon and sore knees, feet and legs from all the walking we have done we decided to stay in Nice for the day today.

Walked about 1 block to pick up croissants for breakfast at Paul's, Joey can picture this route exactly. Home for croissants, Greek yogurt, and orange for breakfast, the orange and yogurt cancel out any calories from the croissant.

Today we headed up to Grotte du Lazaret. We had seen signs for this cave when we did the walk to VilleFranche-Sur-Mer the other day so decided to venture there today. It is just on the other side of the marina, so another trip to the marina is in order, always makes Andre happy when boats are involved. It is free entry, and tours are in French or English, the language is chosen based in the first person to arrive and is given every half hour. We got there about 4 minutes late but were told to join the tour already started, luck would have it, in French. I missed quite a bit of the explanation, but a cave tour is always fun. No entry fee, and cleanest bathrooms we have seen yet outside our apartment, always good.

The tour guide starts with a small intro of about 5 minutes, then it is a movie as you walk through the cave for another 20 minutes or so. This cave has been studied for over 100 years and classified as a Historical Monument in 1963 and excavated in the 1970's. It is estimated that the cave was used from 186,000 to 127,000 years ago. The cave was discovered when a Dr. living in a home next to the cave dug a well for water, and different bones and artifacts were found in 9 feet of sediment. The doctor also put his wine cellar in there as it was cooler.

Following our cave visit we walked back along the waterfront with a slight detour to a path we had missed the other day right down on the waterfront.

Back into old town and we pick up pasta from the pasta shop for the 4th time since we got here. Now that Joey is gone caper, olive, and tomato sauce it is, and it was delicious.

Back to the waterfront to see if much has changed for the setup for the bike race tomorrow starting in Nice. If we are up we will head down for the start, from 7;30AM to 8:30AM. It is supposed to be another rainy afternoon so will get us out of bed and moving before the rain comes.

Walking home we also came across a demonstration, usually we avoid whenever we hear this going on, but today was so sort of feminist parade for International Women's Day. It was very peaceful.

Back at the apartment, pasta for lunch, and a quite afternoon partly spent researching Avignon area where we will head on Monday for a month.

Rain tonight, so we just stayed home and relaxed.

For a lazy kind of day still managed 17,000 steps or 11 KM.

At place Massena, not much is left, where we seated for the parade
