Rainy day

Woke up today to lots of rain, this will be our first wash out day. We are a little disappointed, we'd hoped to do 2 more hikes, but we can't complain, this has been our only truly bad day.

Going into our cottage in the B&B through what will be the new dining room/bar

Stopped at Cow Head to check the wharf but it was raining, so we did not even get out of the car.

Next stop was a visit to Lobster Cove lighthouse.
We had stopped here briefly the other day but only did the little walks around the lighthouse, today we went to tour inside. We were lucky as a tour was just beginning when we went in. The 30 minute tour that is usually given outside was given inside, and turned into more than 1 hour. The guide was fantastic, she was from Sallys Cove which is right down the road and we heard many stories of the area and lighthouse keepers.

It was really raining hard now so we have given up on any walks and spent the rest of the afternoon going into tourist craft shops and then for lunch.

Fish & Chips and Fish Cakes & Homemade Beans for lunch.

We also made a stop at the B&B in Rocky Harbour to pick up the beer that we had forgotten to take with us earlier in the week. Luck would have it, it was still in the fridge, so we're good for a couple more beer tonight.

We have now checked into our hotel in Deer Lake, getting caught up on the blog. The rain seems to have let up so hopefully we'll get in one more walk as we have done basically nothing today.

We walked to the lake from the hotel and walk to the other corner of the lake. From there we walked to Tim Hortos to pick up some chili for supper, which we reheated at the hotel and enjoyed our beer/drinks that we picked up at the B&B earlier.

This was #BeccaToldMeTo day, so we picked up a coffee for the front desk clerk and a small box of timbits.

This week has gone by so quickly, we are already looking at maps to see where we could go next visit, this is a beautiful province, with beautiful friendly people, we can't wait to come back.

Portland Creek area

Another fantastic sleep last night, we have been going to bed by 10 at the latest and getting up after 7, all this walking and fresh air is so good for us!

A great breakfast this morning, and watch all these bikers get ready to head off for the day, some of them are planning on biking 170KM, others have already said they was the van assist, I don't think many will make it the entire way.

Today we are planning on doing some hikes and visits of areas that are around our B&B.
We start off at the Arches provincial park, a great photo op and we take some time to do a little hike up a hill that gives us some even greater vantage points.

We then move on to Steve's trail at Broom Point, which is a very short hike to a gorgeous beach, I am sure this hike is missed by many but it was great. We tried to hike around to the next cove which we had been to earlier in the week but were stopped by a 15 foot cliff at the end that we would have needed to scale down, so some backtracking was done and back to go to the marked trail.

Next we did a quick visit to Broom Point. I was a little disappointed here, I knew it was about fishing in the area and there was a shack and a small house where the fisherman had lived which is now an interpretation centre. The man working there certainly wasn't much into talking or giving much info without us asking questions, so we moved on quite quickly.

We then did a revisit to West Pond River where Don and Eileen had taken us earlier where the river meets the ocean. We did a longer walk around to the ocean, another beautiful spot that is not well marked so I'm sure missed by most except for the locals.

Not too many on the beach today!
Andre testing the water. COLD!

We stopped at a golf course for lunch, had a debate about whether to play golf or not, and decided to pass and do another hike.

A quick spot at another wharf that Andre saw as we were driving by. Parsons Pond.

Next hike was Shallow Bay which was another beautiful beach with lots of sand bars, reminded us a little bit of home.

Next we moved on to walk the 1.5 km boardwalk Bills Woods hiking trail, this was a fun walk all along a boardwalk which has so many pitcher plants, views of the mountains, moose tracks, and ends at a beautiful portland creek pond.

Moose track. That as close to seeing one today

We then headed back to our B&B and spent some time walking the beach here, then reading on the deck.

Our B&B for 2 nights in Portland Creek, we are in the little cottage on the right that is attached

Andre playing taking picture while I might have napped before supper.

Supper tonight was at the B&B again and we both had turbot, which is a fish neither of us had ever had before, a little like flounder, we both really liked it. Tonight there are only 3 of us staying at the B&B and we asked the other man to join us for supper. He is from Saskatchewan and staying here for 3 nights and travelling around from here. We have lots of laughs, Lizzy is our waitress tonight and she really has a strong Nfld accent, and tells us lots of tales and stories. The cook also joined us and we all had a nice visit.
