Copenhagen Denmark Walking Tour

Today starts with a 2.5 hour free walking tour that we had booked. It was fantastic, our guide was so entertaining the time flew by. Yesterday we saw lots from the boat, and today we saw many of the same sites by land but oriented ourselves a little better.

The tour started at the parliament buildings and we were about 10 minutes early so we were able to go in for a quick visit. There was a couple waiting to get married just outside the wedding room. We visited the oldest street in Copenhagen, heard a lot about 2 major fires that happened in this city and how there are not too many old buildings left. We saw where the Royal horses are trained, there were practicing pulling a carriage. Some beautiful squares and parks. Finished the tour at the royal palace.

Grabbed a hot dog, sausage and split a lemonade for lunch from a place with a bunch of food trucks set up and picnic tables, $45, ouch, it really is expensive to eat out here. To get to where we stopped for lunch we crossed a pedestrian/biking bridge that retracts when a sailing boat goes by, we were really lucky to see this as their really aren't many sail boats around.

We took a little break in the afternoon back at the apartment and gave Jill a call for her birthday, got caught up on everything going on at home in Quebec.

After our break we headed to the Lakes section of Copenhagen. It is more of a residential area with 5 “lakes”. We walked around 1 of the lakes, fun to see how the locals live, everyone has a bike it seems. Someone did tell us as they are expanding the metro less people are biking, well we sure see lots of bikes. We were told that to commute into town they have the lights set up on the bike lanes that you hit all green lights once you get going. Over 400 km of bike lanes here, it really is amazing to see, and you have to be very careful on foot that you don't accidentally step into a bike lane.

Supper tonight we picked up some microwave pad thai which was actually pretty good. We tried a different store right around the corner from where we went last night, lots more selections, no more Raman noodles for us.

A city of bikes

After the city had 2 major fires, they created more squares as fire breaks

You need to watch where you walk on the sidewalks, bikes have priority over pedestrians

At city hall

The square in front of city hall

Biker comes out on top of this building if it is nice, woman with umbrella if it is raining, shows the weather forecast

We finished our guided walk at Amalienborg Palace square as the changing of the guard was finishing.

After our walking tour, we explore Copenhagen on our own

Houses with rounded corners at the end of blocks were built after the last major fire so it was easier to run the fire hoses around
