Coyoacan

23,660 Steps

Andre started the day off again today by going out to pick up a coffee and something from the bakery for breakfast.

Next off a visit to Chedraui for a grocery run. As normal we ended up having to carry a lot home, but at least we have a start now on groceries. It certainly helps that we don't have to purchase water as that is the really heavy part. We only got a little mixed up with directions on our phone which doesn't seem to be keeping the sim card active. We are not sure if it is the phone or the sim card, but we will have to take better note of where we are going from now on when we leave the apartment from now on.

A break on the way home from groceries for an ice cream as it is “ice cream for breakfast day”, this means we are not hungry for lunch and decide to head out for the afternoon exploring.

We decided to go to Coyoacan, which is about 10 KM from the city center. First issue is we get a couple of blocks from the apartment and Andre realizes he has forgotten his camera on the table so back he goes. Not a real problem except remember we need to have an elevator man get us to the 6th floor, then Andre has to take the stairs to the 7th floor where our apartment is. He tells the elevator guy to wait for him as he will just be a minute (all in very broken Spanish), it must have been quite the conversation. This is the second security guard/elevator man we have seen, so far it seems they work day and night. We will figure this out more in the days to come.

We had purchased a metro card last night so took advantage of that today. The metro was fairly easy to figure out, like all cities you just have to make sure you get on going in the right direction to start. Metro here is so inexpensive, it is about 70 cents cdn for the two of us each way. There have been issues with sexual harassment with women traveling alone on the metro, so there are now reserved cars for women only, what a great solution. They are easily identified where you line up to get on the metro that it is for women and children only. Another fun thing about the metro is the vendors, they may be even more that we saw on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. Plus, the vendor sell just about everything, we saw lozenges, tape measures, chocolate, chips, sanitizing wipes, and a bunch of other things as well. It is a pretty constant thing of these vendors passing through the cars, and people are buying things.

It is 10 stops on the metro to Coyoacan and we actually did it properly. We decided to walk the 2 km to the market and explore town from the metro exit. This area is much more residential than where we are staying in centro. We just walked through the market quickly then went exploring more of the area. Lots of beautiful cobblestone streets here, and beautiful mansions, there is definitely some money in this area. There is a beautiful church in the main square, and some nice parks to visit. Excited to see a vendor selling corn on the cob or corn in the cup, lunch done. It has been a long time since we had this corn. They put it in a cup, add mayonnaise, cheese, a bit of hot sauce and some seasoning, then you mix it all up for a yummy corn treat.

We had thought about doing the hop on hop off bus in this area but found out it was only in Spanish, too bad as it would have been nice to see more of this part of the city.

We did some wandering around the streets then headed back to the metro to go home. We know we will be back in this area again later in our trip as one of our tours we have booked includes a visit here. Had a nice chat on the metro with the guy sitting beside me that is from Northern Mexico and has traveled extensively. He was asking what we thought of the tariffs, it has been discussed quite a bit with our guide yesterday and this young guy today, only when there are no Americans around. Mexico is in the exact same place as Canada with these tariffs, we shall see what happens.

There is a happy hour 2x1 from 5-7PM roof top bar/restaurant just down the street from us, lucky us it is 5PM when we are going by, perfect time for a drink. It is a very nice bar, a cute little swimming pool that is in use, but we will not be using, it is not that warm here except for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Cucumber margaritas for both of us, a great spot that I am sure we will be back to for another visit.

Home and Andre makes chicken tostadas for supper from our grocery shopping today. A quiet night, hoping that the music is not too loud from our rooftop bar for sleeping.
