Chapultepec Castle

 Chapultepec Castle

Today was a day to stay around Mexico City. We started the day with a visit to Chapultepec Castle. Double decker metro bus again, always fun to sit up top you get to see so much. For 6 pesos it is quite the deal (around .40 Cdn)

Chapultepec Castle has had quite a few residents over the years, and is now the site of the National Museum of History. This is one of only 2 residents in North America that was lived in by monarchs, the other is in Mexico City as well. All of the presidents of Mexico since 1882 lived here, and was also the official residence of Emperor Maximilian. It was a great place to spend most of the morning, lots of history, some beautiful views from balconies.

Done with the castle we walked a bit through the botanical gardens which are in Chapultepec Park. This is a huge park, bigger than Central Park. There is a lake, a zoo, the botanical gardens and the castle.

We walked outside the fencing to look at some pictures that are along the fencing of this huge puppet visiting different parts of Mexico.

Bus part way home to where we thought we may find some lunch. Ended up at a spot that has a number of different restaurants inside and you pick from any of the restaurants you want, kind of like a food court with waiters. It was packed with people so we figured it must be pretty good, and it was.

After lunch decided to walk home and just explore some new streets. We came across a dance recital and stayed to watch a few routines. Always fun to just happen upon these types of things going on, you never know what you will come across by just walking.

Back to the apartment for a rest up then head out once it gets dark for more exploring. Andre had read that Regina is party street for young people so decided to check that out. Party street it is, it is only around 7PM and places are packed with young people drinking huge glasses of beer. Looks like everyone is having a great time, but 7PM is going to make it a rough night with the size of those glasses.

Walked over to the main square again. Tonight we catch the process of the huge flag in the square being taken down for the night. Too bad it wasn't a bit lighter out, it would have been much better if we could have seen more. There were 100's of people watching.

Stopped at a different bakery on our street to pick up some bread for supper and something for breakfast. Like most Mexican bakery sections even in grocery stores you take a tray and some tongs and walk around and add things to your tray that you would like to buy. You then take the tray to the cashier and someone is beside them and wraps up all your goodies while you pay.

Back home for an early night again, no Regina street for us.

One way to water the garden

Chapultepec Castle, where King Maximillian once lived, as well as many presidents. In 1934 it was turned into a museum.

Many murals in the castle

The first room was full of antiques

Love this picture of all the churches together

The view from the balcony. This is the street where the angel of independence is.

Beautiful stained glass. Read that it kept the poor from being able to see inside and all the wealth

We stayed and listen for a while, he was very good

Mural of an eagle attacking a Spanish solder

Tons of vendors in the park

Cactus garden in the botanical garden

Pictures of this huge puppet visiting different parts of Mexico were along the fence to the park. Here is the visit to the square in Mexico City.,
Little Amal, a 3.5-meter-high, touching puppet that personifies a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl, has emerged as the central emblem of “The Walk” project. This mobile human rights icon has toured 15 countries since July 2021, being hailed by more than a million people on the streets, including artists, civil society members and spiritual leaders. It has even conquered the digital community, being enthusiastically received by tens of millions around the world.

The lake in the park, lots of paddleboats out

A great lunch, tacos pastor

Where we had lunch, there were menus from 5 different places inside to choose from

A stop at the artisan coop to catch the show

Hugh traffic on our street today

Regina street is not for old people unless you like loud music and drink liter of beers

Near the main square, great work. Chalk and charcoal drawing.

Got here a bit late for the ceremony to take down the flog, lots of people here

Getting pastries for breakfast tomorrow.
