Day 3 Crete

Pouring rain started during the night, and continued on during the morning.  We decided to just relax out of the rain with Jacques and Rollande at their place, our plane to Crete leaves at 1PM.  We had arranged with our taxi driver that dropped us off to pick us up for the return at 9:30AM, by 9:40 we gave up and just grabbed a taxi off the street.  Jacques and Rollande were going to use the same guy because he spoke excellent English, but I doubt they will now.  Very busy traffic, our taxi turned around after about 10 minutes and went a totally different way then we did coming into town, took about 50 minutes to get to the airport.  We had a great weekend here, but we are ready for a smaller city, really hoping Jacques and Rollande do get to come and visit us on Crete

Our first views of Crete

It was a 50 minute flight from Athens to Chania, lots of turbulence so only about 5 rows were served drinks and cookies.  On the way off the plane the flight attendants handed us packages of cookies.  We knew that there was a direct bus from Chania where we are landing to Rethymno where we are staying that was scheduled to leave 30 minutes after our arrival.  Of course our luggage was the last off the plane, but we made it to the bus with 6 minutes to spare.  Now that we have seen how tiny this airport is I think they wait to make sure everyone is out before the bus leaves.  8Euro per person for bus that took about 1 hour and 10 minutes to get to Rethymno.

We were slightly slowed down because of orange truck delivery

Our first views of Rethymno, our home for the next 7 weeks
The owners of the apartment we are renting have sent us instructions on how to find it from the bus terminal.  It actually isn't too hard to find, about 1km walk.  It is a bit of a pain with suitcases on the cobblestones, but we survive.  There is a lockbox so we are set to get in and get settled.  We are really hungry by this point, so venture out and stop at a little spot around the corner from us and get a pizza to split.  After ordering we notice there is a pizzeria about 3 shops down from us, oh well we had a nice waitress that got us pointed in the right direction to go and get groceries.
This is going to be scary, we have now made friends with the gelato shop workers, it is only about 100 yards from our apartment.  They told us it is not too cold to eat gelato because we are Canadian, so of course we had to have some.  I am certain it will not be our last visit here.
After picking up some groceries we ventured out to see the sunset, do some exploring and of course take pictures
