Progreso Beach

Today Andre stayed home to work on the blog and pictures again this morning.  Monday as always is a busy day here, pool cleaners arrive, as well as 2 cleaners for the house.  I had already stripped the bed and put sheets on the line so they would dry for the cleaners, next thing I know our bed has been made?  Not sure where those sheets came from.

Yesterday when we got turned around on our adventure to Progreso we decided that we would go this afternoon.  It was so hot yesterday we decided an afternoon at the beach was in order.  We have heard differing views on Progreso, that the beach is not nice, it is not a nice town etc  Well we loved our afternoon.  It is about a 1 hour bus ride from Merida, $1.50 per person, I have no idea how these buses make any money.  This is a nice bus with air conditioning.  They run every 15 minutes or so, and this bus station is about a 15 minute walk from our house.  So we pack up as soon as it is lunch break for me and off we go.

Arrived at the bus station and there is a bus loading, they wait for us to buy out tickets and we are off. Uneventful ride, it takes as long to get out of the city as it does on the highway drive to the beach.  Our first impression of Progreso, this is like old orchard beach on steroids.  The bus station is about a 3 block walk to the beach.  Right away we can feel the difference in the temperature compared to Merida, it is so nice to be near the water.  Both of us had worn our bathing suits, didn’t take long for us to get in the water.
Fruit and yogurt for breakfast this AM

You see lots of sandwiches for sale on the sidewalks, too much heat for me to trust eating these

Yes, Bimbo bread is here

Mayan world museum in Merida, will try to get here one day

They claim to have the longest pier in the world

So nice to be in the ocean

After a short swim time to find somewhere to eat.  We wanted somewhere with shade, and then lounge chairs to spend the afternoon.  After a bit of walking around we found this really fantastic restaurant named Crabster.   What an amazing meal.  I had a shrimp and crab burger with fries, Andre had octopus.  Along with large margaritas, really good.  We spent the entire afternoon here, Andre may have had a rum and coke and a couple of beer, my large margarita did me in for the afternoon.  A couple of naps, reading, a couple of dips in the ocean and a fantastic way to spend a Monday afternoon.  The ocean was so very warm we couldn’t believe it, we were trying to remember if we had ever been south this late in the year.  There is a little bit of seaweed around, but nothing terrible.

That was one huge margarita!

Yummy lunch

I think we seen all they vendors there was to be seen today while lounging on the beach.  Here are a few pictures of the afternoon views.

Back to the bus station at around 6PM, again a bus is loading and we buy our tickets and get right on.  There are a few commuters with us heading back to Merida, it definitely wouldn’t pay to have a car here if you were travelling this route for work, it is so cheap to bus, and they are so frequent

Todays bug has a fancy green coloring.

nice clouds on the bus ride home

Back to Merida, stopped for an ice cream for supper on the way home.  Nice to arrive to a nice clean house and pool.  The cleaners had brought the laundry in for me, guess they worried about rain.  Nothing exciting on tonight, early to bed after an afternoon out in the sun.
