Check out of our apartment at 10AM, our bus leaves at 11:50 from a spot outside of town that we will need to take a local bus to get to. We have driven by the spot before on buses but never stopped, hopefully we will get it right the first time. We debated taking the free little bus up to catch the local bus but decided it is pretty much a downhill walk and since we will be spending most of the day in a bus we will just walk. It was easy to get to where we needed to be, and arrived with nearly an hour to kill before our bus to Lyon arrives. The bus is actually going on to Dijon, the only thing I know about Dijon is mustard, it is somewhere we didn't even look at going, wonder if we are missing something?
Bus ride was mostly highway, an easy ride that we actually stopped for 30 minutes rest stop which was great. We hadn't packed any lunch and the stop had a little grocery store, so premade sandwiches and pretzels and lunch is done. There was also a McDonald at the stop, but wow the prices!
Arrived in Lyon and had about 30 minutes before our apartment would be available so head off to tourist info for the maps. We had the most helpful person! We pretty much have our week planned now. First impressions of Lyon, we could be in Paris! Lyon has the Rhone and Saone rivers that merge here and the city is kind of divided in 3 sections because of the rivers. Lots and lots of bridges to cross. Many of the bridges are pedestrian, and they are quite close together which makes it easy to get around. Where the bus terminal and info centre are located is in the middle section, which is pretty much all 19th century beautiful buildings, that are just like Paris. We are staying in Old Town, which is just over Saone River. On crossing the bridge we can see just how high the water is, the pathways down the riverbank are covered with water, we won't be going that way any time soon.
Find our apartment, it is tiny in a very old building but the apartment itself has been recently renovated. It is perfect for the week. That is once we got the washing machine figured out, with the help of the owner stopping by. Now we just have to figure out how to do a quick load that does not take 2 hours!
Supper at home tonight, we are in the culinary capital of France but tonight will eat in and make plans for somewhere for tomorrow night. Not the most exciting day but we are so looking forward to exploring tomorrow.
