When we arrived in Lyon our first stop was the tourist information and one question we asked was if we were to use public transport to go somewhere to visit for 1 day where should we go, Perouges it was. So even though we have been to see a couple of Medieval Towns this trip we decided to give it a go as it is part of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. It was a 2 Euro bus ride each way for each of us. I sure can't figure out bus rates, this took us just over 1 hour and only cost 2 Euro. About a 1.5 km walk uphill from the bus stop, and as soon as we walked through the gate we knew how special this place was. Perouges itself has about 1300 population, but inside the town walls there are only about 80 people left living there. In the early 1900's it was pretty much deserted and there was talk of demolition, but a group was formed to and the town was saved, restoration began and it is still going today. There are some movies filmed here, actually one street was blocked off for filming this week. This is a tiny town, easy to pretty much do everything there in 1.5 hours, but it was amazing, we have definitely never seen anything like it. We were also lucky as there weren't too many tourists around. One bus tour came through and we saw them at one of the entrances to the town, but we never did see them again. The culinary specialty here is sugar galette, I was kind of expecting sugar pie, but it was nothing like that. It was shaped like a triangle piece of pizza, some kind of dough on the bottom and a sugar glaze on top. It was quite yummy and hit the spot when we needed a break. There are some nice walks that you can join on to from the town but we decided to walk the outside walls a bit then head back to Lyon. Still lots on our list in Lyon to do.
The bus ride back took us a different route in Lyon and we saw the first of the park and zoo, these are both free admittance. The park looks huge, we may end up there on the weekend, we shall see.
Got off the bus at a different spot in Lyon so we would walk a different street. Didn't take long to realize we had already walked this street earlier this week. Stopped at a patisserie for a piece of their pizza for lunch, Andre added a creme brule which he said was the best he has had since he has been in France, he even went back into the shop to tell them.
Rest up back at the apartment, plan for a walk later for some night shots of the city.
Out tonight for a night walk to look around, we haven't done much of this yet. The basilica and cathedral are beautifully lit up at night, with some nice views along the water. End of another great day.
