Sept 11 memorial & museum

Today we have tickets for a tour of the 911 memorial and museum. The entire area is extremely moving. The tour was excellent, lots of stories about some of the heroes. The tour lasted about 1 hour, then we spent about another 2 hours exploring on our own. There is so much memorabilia here, you could spend days just looking at everything. There is everything from fire trucks, to pieces of paper that fell from the sky on display.

Actual stairs that were used to escape the area

From here we took the subway back to Grand Central Station. We had read about a Christmas market, not sure what we were expecting but this was not it. Really just some shopping, not much decorated for Christmas, we could have taken a pass on this one, but it was fun to see Grand Central Station a little busier at this time of day.

We walked to the library, I really wanted to go on the 2PM tour, but it was full. We had a pamphlet that we used to find the highlights in the library, but it really deserved more time to wander.

Beautiful Library

We planned on walking home from the library but it is really starting to snow, and it is a very wet snow, so we ducked into the first subway stop we found and got as close to home as possible. The subway entrances are so strange in NYC, there is no consistency, more then once we asked for directions where the subway was and it was basically right in front of us.

Decided to have lunch/supper at the Thai place again so Andre could have his Pad Thai that I shamed him out of the other day. Another excellent meal.

Back to the apartment to get packed up. Andre and I are leaving tonight for Italy, Andre and Diane leave tomorrow morning for Bangor.

The weather is really getting nasty out there. We have decided to take the subway/train to JFK, I can’t imagine how much UBER or a taxi would cost, if they would even make it. We leave in lots of time, at the subway Andre realizes he has dropped a glove so I stay with our stuff and he runs back to find it, he is pretty sure he knows where he dropped it. Next we get on the wrong subway, no idea how we managed that, but we did. Needed to backtrack to get on the right subway, and eventually found our way to the train to take us to the airport, so all is good. It is extremely busy getting on the train, there were lots of warnings today to stay off the roads, so everyone is basically using public transit.

We still arrive at the airport in lots of time. We are flying with Emirates on one of those huge double decker planes, a first for us. Unfortunately we are not on the top floor, but still a very nice plane. We have a 1 hour delay to our departure, which turns into leaving over 2 hours late, but considering how many flights are cancelled we are very happy to get on the way.
