Exploring old town Lyon

Today we spent the day in Lyon. Started off this morning going to the market that is just across the river from us to pick up a few fresh vegetables and fruit. Stores here have limited fruit and vegetables, most people get these at the market. It was much smaller than we expected, but with us only being here 1 week we didn't need a lot of things anyway.

Had lunch at the apartment then off exploring Old Town Lyon a lot more. We are staying on this side so we have been around a couple of times, but today was a thorough exploration. We had a map from tourist information that outlined really 3 walks, Traboules & Courtyards, Narrow & Picturesque Streets, and Facades. We went in lots and lots of traboules, many just led to courtyards and some connected streets through little passageways. The ones leading to courtyards are all privately owned, some have the doors unlocked to enter, some we hit the service button and they opened. Some were really pretty, some not so much. Getting into our apartment we go through a locked door outside and then a really small courtyards then up a spiral staircase to our apartment. Now that we have done this tour we are definitely the norm, not the exception. Now I also know I don't need to remember the code to enter the main door, the service button works.  There are over 600 traboules in town, some are private and they post signs outside the doors.

Lots of little narrow cobblestone streets with medieval homes from the 16th century. One street took us to the only raining timber framed “piedmont” galleries, we definitely would have never found these without the map.

Many beautiful homes from the 15th and 16th century, some of the doors are equally impressive as the facades themselves.

After all this touring happened across a little bar by the train station and since a bathroom break was needed it was also a good time for a beer and spritz. The weather has really turned since we arrived on Monday in the heat. Tuesday morning was rain and then it turned cold. Winter jackets are out again, on and off. The wind has shifted and is coming from the North, I'm not sure if we even made it much over 12 degrees today, but long range looks beautiful for the weekend.

Hope for supper tonight, even thought it sounds like we didn't do much it was a busy day.
