Pack up this morning, try to remember where we had moved everything to put it back in place like we found it in the apartment. Most obviously was the microwave that we put in our bedroom closet. The kitchen counter was so tiny that we moved the microwave. Apartment check at 10AM, first time we have had the towels counted, I told her we didn't have room in our carry on luggage to steal towels!
One thing we did forget was laundry soap, probably the most expensive thing we bought. Of well.
Train leaves at 11:30, so a slow walk up to the train station and a last goodbye to Nice. We absolutely loved our time here, hoping the rest of our stay in France is as good. After 2.5 hours we transfer trains in Marseilles. Couldn't believe how big the train station is here. It is about the size of the Halifax airport, make Nice look so tiny! We had about 30 minutes here, so time to find the bathroom and then on to the next train. The trains today are so much nicer than the ones we have used around the local places in Nice, more like business class on a flight. No assigned seats, we actually thought we were in the wrong class car on the train so asked someone. Good luggage racks that we were able to sit close to, the trains were really quiet. Our final train ride was just over 1 hour and 20 minutes to Avignon.
Arrival in Avignon and this train station is a huge construction mess inside and out. A much smaller train station, and the bus station is right outside as well, we will be heading back this way a lot in the next month, about a 15 minute walk from our apartment.
Arrived at the apartment and the property manager is right behind us walking down the street. Wow, this apartment is amazing to see, over 300 years old and the floors and walls are original except the bathroom. Problem is old building did not have many windows, so it is very dark inside. The only really big changes they made are the bathroom and a nice open kitchen on one wall. Living dining kitchen are one big room with the original fireplace that is now the TV stand that you could put a huge TV in if you wanted. What we really miss is a closet in the bedroom. They have this ladder thing that I have hung all my clothes on, they do have a small closet in the entrance that Andre has cleaned up and is using for all his clothes. It will do, but I'm surprised they haven't put at least a dresser in the bedroom, the bedroom is huge and plenty of room for a dresser or something.
Off to find the grocery store to pick up a few things for breakfast tomorrow and to get us going. We plan on visiting the market in the morning. We walk down to the tourist information building and we now have the 50 brochures from here to get us started. Back to our grocery find and we go into Monoprix, a store we used in Nice, but wow this is about 1/10 of the size. Not many choices, but enough to get us started. There is a Carrafour on the street as well, will try that one next.
On the way back home it started to rain, you can get pretty wet in 15 minutes walking with groceries.
Andre turned on TV, found out last person here didn't sign out of Netflix, took advantage of that and watched an episode of the new Drive to Survive series, guess we will have Netflix for this trip.
Pasta supper made and we head out to see the town at night. So many less people out and about than in Nice, not sure I would have gone very far by myself, it was so quiet. We walked to see the Papal Palace which we hadn't been to yet, then outside the wall to see the famous Avignon bridge. Both we will definitely be visiting, both have admission fees, but I think we get discounts here as we are over that magic number of 60.
Checked out a few restaurants that we walked by, prices are slightly less than Nice, around the same price as home.
Rain is starting again, so we head back to the apartment before we get soaking wet again. A bottle of leftover wine to finish from supper, and of course that Netflix series....
Looking forward to exploring more in the daylight tomorrow and going to the market.
Today's steps 13,700 or 8.7 km.
Last breakfast in Nice
