Another later start to the morning but we are on our way around 9:30AM to catch the train to Cannes. The train is more expensive then the bus, but I am sick of taking the bus and having to sit backwards so we are on the train today. It is about a 1KM walk to the train station from our apartment. Can't quite figure out how to buy 2 tickets at once so it takes a while to purchase 2 separate tickets from the machine, missed a train by about 2 minutes, but this is a very popular train route and another train comes by in about 20 minutes. This gives Andre a change to wander around and take pictures, it is a beautiful old train station.
Train to Cannes is a double decker, we go upstairs and sit on the sea side for pictures, plus we were facing forward! Nice to sit on the sea side, but I'll be surprised if any of Andres pictures of the train ride make the blog, the windows were so dirty! The train ride is about 30 minutes from Nice to Cannes.
Arrive on Cannes and walk down to the tourist information and get a map as well as suggestions for a walking tour. He tried to sell us the little train ride that takes an hour around town, but no success, we are walkers. Start off by going to the Marche Forville which we were a little late arriving at, but still nice to see so much fresh produce to choose from. Lots of locals out, as well as tourists. Our only purchase was splitting some delicious fries, she seems to be somewhat famous for her fries, at least there were newspaper articles pinned up on her station, and they were delicious.
Following the market we then walked through some beautiful pedestrian streets climbing up to the church and tower in old town for some beautiful views of the city, port and beaches.
Back down through old town and find Les Murs Peints, which is the painted wall of “Cannes Cinema” on top of the bus station entrance. I had seen pictures somewhere of this online so was happy to find it by change to see in person.
Feb 23-25 is a huge games festival of some sort here so unfortunately we weren't able to get our picture taken on the red carpet. So much has been roped off in preparation, pictures sent to Jake, he probably would have liked it here for this festival.
We walk along the shoreline admiring the very high end shopping stores from a distance, and the beautiful hotels, both of which we didn't even try to enter. We did see 3 men turned away from the casino because they were wearing jeans, we didn't even attempt to enter. There are so many high end beach clubs along the shoreline that it is hard to even find somewhere you can get on the beach. At the end of the walkway there are some stairs for those that want to just go on the beach. Walked a while on the beach, felt the water, a couple of people in swimming, but I think I would freeze when I got out.
Back towards the train station on some back streets, nothing too exciting, but did see what may have been some more affordable stores. Stopped at a nice bakery for a treat, delicious, it is a tart filled with custard and raisins, yummy, Andre had some kind of chocolate and custard pastry.
Back on the train and decide to find the Lidl store for shopping, it is actually not out of the way much for the walk home from the train station and lots of deals to be had, a good stop. Stocked up a little for when Joey arrives tomorrow, but we will probably go to the market with her anyway for more supplies.
Second trip to the grocery store that is just around the corner from us for a couple of the heavier supplies, .96Euro for 5L of water here, and we needed more milk, plus ice cream is now in the freezer for the same price as 1 scoop around town here.
Eggplant Parmesan for supper as well as the leftover pasta from last night. Looking forward to showing Joey around starting tomorrow for 2 weeks. Step count today 19,400 or 12.3KM. Andre got 400 more steps as he forgot his wallet and had to walk back to the apartment. It is 200 steps from the apartment to the grocery store and that's a good thing.
Nice has a beautiful train terminal
