Today we are spending the day in Nice. After all the excitement yesterday I don't think anyone is disappointed to be not taking trains or busses today.
We had purchased tickets to an concert at the Opera House earlier in the week. We were not exactly sure what we were going to see, it was open seating so we arrived about an hour before it started so we could get good seats. We ended up in one of the balconies and had a fantastic view. It took a while for the Opera House to fill up but as more and more people arrived they opened more floors of the venue until most all seating was taken. It was just a brass concert with 6 people. Lots and lots of children in the audience. They started off playing theme songs to TV shows, many of them were old and we recognized them (friends, Love Boats, ..) , then movie themes, ten cartoons and finally video games themes. It was very entertaining with a small graphic show of what the music was from on the stage, fun to try to guess before they showed us. Perhaps best of all was the Muppets, we felt like the two old Muppets where we were seated. It was good entertainment for an hour, plus we got to see inside the beautiful Opera House.
Following the concert we walked along the Promenade des Anglais. It is a beautiful day, lots and lots of people out enjoying the sun and walking along the water. Got to see some of the floats that are going to be in the parades.
Into old town in search of something for lunch. We decided on visiting a bakery that was out the other day of bread, it is a small family run bakery called Zielinska, unfortunately we were all a little disappointed and will not be going back, especially for 6 Euro for a loaf of bread. We think maybe it wasn't cooked long enough. Off to get a rotisserie chicken, but closed by the time we got there. Decided we would just make sandwiches with what is in the fridge on the bread we bought.
Next off we are going to a full symphony concert at the Basilica Notre Dame. This is a free concert starting at 3:30PM. Glad we got there at 3PM or we would have been standing up. This was a beautiful concert, the acoustics are fantastic. Unfortunately we are so far at the back we can't see much as the band was not on a stage. None of us were disappointed we went as they sounded terrific.
Leaving the concert it has started to rain, this was forecast for this afternoon so we weren't shocked, good thing it is only about a 10 minute walk to our apartment. Stopped at Monoprix which is big grocery store we had not visited yet but is on the way home from the concert. It is a much bigger grocery store that we have visited so far, picked up supper, wine and back to the apartment.
Played some cards after supper, Joey won, then Andre ventured out on his own to take some pictures with wet streets, Joey and I stayed in the dry apartment.
What seemed like a slow day and still 13,500 steps or 8.5 KM. Add 4000 steps to andre's total for his night tour. I think this will be at least a million step vacation.
Cellphone pictures today as I left my camera behind
We are going to the Opera house
love those night shots.
