Wadi Rum

Sept 20th Afternoon

This is the desert that was made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Lunch at the information centre where we say lots of movie posters from different movies that have been filmed here. Lunch today I had a shawarma sandwich, I think I have had that every day so far for lunch!

After lunch we have a jeep tour. Laugh when the jeeps show up, they are Toyota trucks with benches in the back for 6 people to sit on. First stop is at the 7 Pillars of Wisdom for photos.

We move on then to a lookout where we climb a large sand dune for views of the valley.

We stop next to see some petroglyphs from over 2000 years ago. These were amazing, just a tiny little landing to climb up to see the drawings.

Next stop is for tea and of course a shopping experience, again the thing I hate most about this type of tour is the shopping experiences, even in the middle of the desert! This was OK though as we were given lots of information about the headscarves the men wear, and camels, all interesting. Then the soap and the black eyeliner they push here shopping spiel, we left the tent at this point to take some pictures outside as this was the area the Lawrence of Arabia lived for 2 years.

Finally move on to our camp for the night. Happy to not be climbing in and out of the back of the truck any more. Our group is split into 4 different camps tonight. In our camp we are upgraded to a dome tent which the person we booked through gave us this upgrade, I can't imagine spending I think $200 more to spend a night in this dome tent. Lucky for us our camp had a pool, quick change and we are off to the pool, which was surprisingly cold, but still felt good.

Time for supper and they have cooked chicken and lamb, vegetables and potatoes in an underground oven. This underground BBQ is called a Zarb, by the Bedouins. We were able to watch them take the sand off the top, then blankets, then remove the huge racks that everything had cooked on under ground. Dinner was excellent, our favourite so far.

Camel crossing sign, not something we are used to seeing at home!

And there they are, camels crossing

Dining room, we chose to sit at tables and chairs, Vietnam on the floor was enough eating on the floor for one year
