Seyðisfjörður, Stuðlafoss Canyon and Dettifoss

Today we moved on early as we have a lot we want to do, believe it or not we passed on going back to see the puffins again. Started with the scenic drive back over the mountain pass, we see our first 2 nice turf houses in Eystri on the way out.

On the drive we also pass some snowcats parked at a ski hill, surprising just how many ski hills we see, but we see many more golf courses than ski hills that really surprise us.

We move on to the cute little town of  Seyðisfjörður.  You may have seen pictures of the rainbow street here leading to the pretty blue church.  This was a nice town to walk around and visit the couple of little shops for souvenirs.  A couple of little shops I said as that is basically all that there is there.   We already bought our magnet, no more shopping for us.  Though I did look at the puffin mittens, they just didn’t have any small ones. This is the second town we have seen a cruise ship in, though not sure if we saw any people off the cruise ship just walking around town,  it certainly wasn’t busy.  This is also where the ferry from Denmark arrives, it takes 2 days to get to this town from Denmark.

We carry on and make a stop at a gas station to fill up, which we try to do every time we are at about ½ full.  Bathroom break and hotdog and ice cream for lunch.  A little comedy here as we were being served by the supervisor and a younger kid was serving the person beside us.  The kids phone rings and he takes it out of his pocket, the supervisor told him he was working and he should not be answering his phone.  His response “I can’t control when someone calls me”.  She apologized to all of us, we had a good laugh.

Next stop is another waterfall, Rjukandi.  We hadn’t planned to stop here but it was right on the ring road so a quick stop for picture was made.  We did not climb up the to write our name in the log book.

We next move on to Stuðlafoss Waterfall & Canyon.  A spectacular canyon with impressive basalt columns, and a small waterfall at the beginning of the walk in the canyon.  We walked along the east side of the canyon.  The west side had a few viewing points that had many steps to get to them, and they are adding more viewing points when we were there.  We were very happy we did the East side,  we think it may have had the best views, only downfall was we had to pay for parking once again.  Andre went into the bottom of the canyon, I chose to take pictures from the top.  This really is a spectacular spot.  We spent quite a bit of time here, it was a bit busy with tourists, but not crazy, after all we were 2 of the tourists.

On the way to our next stop we went over Iceland's only suspension bridge. We also see examples of cairns, stone cairns were once used to mark the way. We saw someone biking on a pedal bike, not a motorcycle today as well.  I can’t imagine biking in this wind.  We did talk to a couple of bikers in camps, crazy, between the wind and no real road shoulders, people renting campers for the first time, and truckers you couldn’t have paid me to bike these roads, forgot to mention the hills.

Dettifoss is our final stop today.  I found this waterfall looked a little like the Canadian side of Niagara falls.  Nice little walks around here to see Europe's most powerful waterfall.  Bonus, no charge for parking.

We are done for the day today at 6:30 and check into Vogar Camping which cost approx. $60.00.  Again time for showers, nice facilities near a lake.  This place had a large common area with 2 full kitchens.  Problem most of the tables were taken up by people playing cards/games, but we did end up finding a place to share with some Germans.
