Ouarzazate is the Hollywood of Morocco. We start today with a visit of the Kasbah of Taourirt. We picked up a guide that gave us a tour here as well as stuck with us for the morning in Ouarzazate. There was not much activity here this morning, but always interesting visiting the little streets.
Next we went to visit a studio/museum where many movies have been filmed. Will watch for Gladiator 2 when it comes out as part of it was filmed here.
Off next to visit Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, which is a UNESCO heritage site. We didn't visit this 10 years ago, and loved the visit here today, mainly because it involved quite a bit of walking and some gorgeous scenery. Very few families live here still, they have all moved across the road to flatter ground. Our group split in 2 here, those that wanted to go to the cafe, and those that wanted to climb to the top view point, no surprise-we climbed. It was not nearly as bad as it looked from below to climb, and some beautiful views from the top, so glad we did it. The 6 month pregnant woman on our tour made me feel like I “had” to do it. We have learned that Friday is couscous day, so decision make, lunch at the terrace looking up at the beautiful Kasbah was couscous, which was delicious.
Basically the rest of the day is spent driving over the High Atlas mountains to Marrakesh. Lots and lots of climbing and twisty roads. We have managed to move our way up close to the front of the bus for this trip so I am very happy, no motion sickness at all. First day instructions to move two rows forward and two rows back depending on the side of the bus you are on has not been followed closely, but this is the last big driving day so we are happy to be done with this last drive.
We are staying in Marrakesh in the new section of town, all the excitement in Marrakesh is in the old Medina, especially at night. Our guide Youssef has arranged for the bus to take us into the Medina tonight after supper so everyone can experience it, this was not part of our itinerary. So many memories of our time spent here last time, so many people, so many smells, so much noise, sensory overload. Everyone had a great time, it was a nice surprise to have this done, and no one got lost!
View of Kasbah of Taourirt from where we got dropped of by the bus.
