catacombs & Montparnasse Area

Tuesday - 27,000 steps

Today we had noon reservations at the catacombs. Decided to walk there and do some visiting along the way, it should take us about 1 hour if we don't get too lost!

A store just for umbrellas, luckily not needed today

Catacombs were something that we wanted to visit when we were in Rome, but it just didn’t work out, Paris is an easy visit, it is right in the city. So glad we had made a reservation, there was easily a 2 hour line if you didn’t have a reservation.

The catacombs is where there are up to 6 million people were moved to quarries to rest from other parts of Paris in the 1700’s. It is over 1 km of walking through the quarries to visit. It is said that Paris got the idea from Rome and Florence. They only allow 200 people in at a time, and between tours and people with advanced reservations it doesn’t leave much time for people that have not made reservations. There is a good audio tour that comes along with the ticket, we all really enjoyed this, even though it is slightly creepy.

Pictures do not do it justice, just how big this place is

Yes, these are all bones, and they go on and on....

After the Catacombs we picked up some bread, cheese, ham and a bottle of red wine and had a picnic in Jardin du Luxembourg. No cork screw with us, but the cashier opened the bottle for us. Andre has been carrying around 4 plastic glasses just for such an occasion. It is another beautiful day, needed to find some shade for our little picnic. How civilized to be able to have a glass of wine in an public space without any worries.

Police vans were all lined up along this street, think it was a drill or training

Preparing our picnic lunch

After our picnic we visited more of the gardens. Lots of chairs are available around the garden for you to have a sit and relax and enjoy the beautiful gardens around Palais du Luxembourg.

Next we stopped for a visit at St. Sulpice church, known for having two towers that do not match.

Time for another ice cream break, the little bench outside came in handy for a rest stop

A little out of our price range

These scooters are for rent everywhere, lots of people use them

There was an entire block of beautiful photography that we visited

Next on the list was the Pantheon, the crypt was closing in 20 minutes so only had a quick visit there, you could literally spend hours in the crypt, so much information on the people that are there. Another 30 minutes before closing on the main floor, so a quick visit.

The Crypt, a little like a maze

From here we walked to La Sorbonne. Lots of University students out and about on the streets, a very vibrant part of the city.

A photographer set up shop on the street

We all loved the Latin Quarter. This is where we found Rue du Chat qui Peche, the narrowest street in Paris at 6’ wide. Also No22 Rue St. Severin the narrowest house in Paris. Lots of cute little restaurants in the area, with lots of inexpensive table d'hôte options.
