Quirpon Island to Portland Crrek

Andre is up early this morning to try to catch the sunrise, a quick shower and off I go to find him. It is a beautiful morning, we have so lucked out here, not so sure we would have liked it this much if the weather was crappy.

We stayed in the little house just down from the main house

Our breakfast is scheduled for 8:30 so we have about 1 hour to walk around. We would have liked more time to do another longer hike, but it would have meant 2 nights here. We spent most of the morning looking for whales, but no luck. We will have to come back.

This morning breakfast was a little disappointing, cream of wheat, a hard boiled egg, toast, sausages and the kicker was frozen hash brown thing, like you would get at McDonalds.

After Breakfast we watch a boat fish for cod and walked around the property.

Fishing for cod

We have decided to take the zodiac back off the island today, many are walking out, but we thought the zodiac would be fun since we walked in yesterday morning. It was a very calm boat ride, I guess when others came in 2 days ago it was very rough, I was glad I wasn't on that trip in.

Zodiac coming to pick us up

Back at the dock and we pick up our car and travel on to our first stop of the day in Great Brehat. This is a spot that Don and Eileen told us about, and turned out to be one of our favourite spots. We walked around for some gorgeous views, picked and snacked on some blueberries and best of all saw a whale right off the shore, we actually heard it before we saw it.

Great Brehat

A fisherman was drying salt cod as we left the village. Andre HAD to stop and talk to him.

Next stop is St Anthony where again very pretty views. This would be a fantastic spot if the whales and icebergs were around, but unfortunately we are too late for both. We do a hike up 400+ steps for some more gorgeous views of the bay and town.

Gardens are right along the side of the road as you drive along, good topsoil from when the roads were built.  Sometimes there are no houses around for miles, just gardens

St Anthony

Yes we are going to hike up all those stairs to the top

Looking for a ride down

So worth the effort when you get to the top

We stopped at the Grenfell Historic property, only the second place we have paid an admittance for this entire trip. This was a very interesting stop where we learned about how this Dr. Grenfell brought hospitals and medical ships for this first time to Labrador and Newfoundland in the late 1800's.

Along the way we stopped at a salmon interpretation center but it was not open. Lots of water flowing down the river. Only did a short part of the walk as time was getting short.

We are now off to Portland Creek where we will spend the next 2 nights. It is about a 3.5 hour drive from St Anthony, some pretty spots, and a good part of the drive is really quite boring. We had made a dinner reservation at the B&B where we are staying for 7:30 and we arrive pretty much on time at 7:00PM. We are in a small cottage that is attached to the main house with a section that is under construction to be their new restaurant/bar. There is also a biking tour here, that provides us some entertainment. The biking tour has a lot of their stuff set up in the construction area and Lizzy who checks us in is not so impressed with them. We will hear a lot more from her about this over the next 2 days, it was very funny. A fantastic dinner of pan fried cod and we are off to bed for another early night. We have a fantastic sleep with the windows open listening to the waves that are right outside our bedroom window.
