Off to Portree, Isle of Skye via Mallaig Ferry

Up very early this morning, breakfast didn’t start until 7:30 so had to kill some time.  Andre went downstairs and worked on the blog while I tried to sleep some more.

Breakfast this morning

Our hotel last night

After breakfast we headed off driving towards Mallaig where we are catching the ferry to Mallaig which takes us to Isle of Skye where we will spend the next 2 nights.  We prebooked a ferry for 1:45 crossing which is only about 1.5 hour drive, but we know we always have to multiply drive times x at least 2 because of stops.

First stop this morning was at Glenfinnan Monument.  This is also where part of the Harry Potter films were shot, at the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Flyover, we think for a bike race that is happening this week-end

We took the beach road to Mallaig, and happened across a golf course that was fun to see.  Always fun to see sheep on the road as well.  This was basically a single track half the time, but lots of camp sites along here, a camper would not have been fun to drive here.

We got to the ferry terminal about 1 hour before departure, parked the car and had time for a very quick lunch at a bar that had excellent soup.

The ferry ride over is very pretty, but very very windy.  You arrive in Armadale on Isle of Skye, missed a couple of spots we wanted to stop but no where to easily turn around so we continued on.

No dog waiting at this door...

Andre found another scenic route for us, this one was a little scary.  This was single track the entire time and not nice paved road, I was glad to get off this one.  Again came across sheep on the road.  We are seeing lots of lambs, I guess we are here at the right time of year.

Next stop was at Sligachan, this seems to be a hiker starting point.  We went along a trail here to some beautiful vistas of the Cuillin Hills, and a very pretty river running as well.  Saw lots of walkers around.

We then continued on to Portree and found our place for the next 2 nights.  Portree is a small pretty port village that seems to still be a working fisherman town as well.  We went for a nice Indian supper tonight.  First time we have ever heard that you have to order everything right away, if you want more Naan bread you can’t get it, you must order it right away.  Walked down to the wharf after supper, fisherman were coming in with their catch langostina, fun to watch them sorting it and the seagulls enjoying the leftovers.   We also found where Gilles and John will be staying when they come here next month for Johns 50th.  It is now 10PM, the sun is just starting to set, we are certainly here for the longest days of the year.  Can’t wait for another full day tomorrow on Skye.
