Martina Franca

15,000 steps and our shortest day of driving,, only 20kms

This morning we visited the city closest to our Trulli. We had only stopped in Martina Franca on our way here to get groceries, so it was time for a real visit to the old town. This city was the most difficult to navigate, lots and lots of traffic circles to get to where we could find parking. Like all of the cities we have visited so far there is a ring road around the old town, so you don't actually have to go into the tiny streets, but it was still a lot of driving through a city to get to park. We parked at a multi level parking garage and got a ticket to pay and validate when you get out.

This is the biggest city since we were in Naples. Nothing like that size, but still not a little country town. Also unlike any other city we have visited there is lots of Baroque architecture. The Basilica was especially beautiful. Lots of other churches to visit, and many palaces. Unfortunately most of the palaces were on tiny street and you kinda only say the front door when you are standing 4-6 feet away. There was an especially pretty semi circular portico building that we had lunch in, pizza was really good again. We spent about 3 hours in town, just walking around, following a little map we had of a walking tour. Again very few tourists around.

We found the machine to pay for our parking, 4 Euros since we were over 3 hours. When we got to the gate, the gate opened up by itself, I am guessing we did not have to pay but it would not have been fun to back out.

After our time in Martina Franca we decided to drive to a spot close to our rental where we had seen places you could pull on to the side of the road and go for a little walk. This area has some especially pretty Trulli, we have gone by here 5 or 6 times now and said we should stop, so today we finally did it. One was for sale, a little to much of a fixer upper for us I think.

Back to our rental for our last night here. The kitty cat that I have been spoiling with cheese is waiting at the door for us, she is going to miss us coming back tomorrow night. Tomorrow night we are actually staying not far from where we are right now, but first we need to drive back to Bari, about an hour away to return our rental car, then the rest of our travel will be done by train.

We have had a great stay here, it is a great location for visiting around Puglia and the little towns.
