Lameque Day 3

Today we explore the remainder of Lameque Island, the east side since we visited the west side yesterday afternoon.

The view from our cottage

They were fishing something, oysters???

Our first stop is to look at the peat moss field not too far from where we are staying. Peat moss is a large industry on the island.

We follow the coast up to Pigeon Hill with a few stops along the way.

Pigeon Hill is at the top of Lameque Island. We go for a walk on the beach up to the end.

Wendy would not let me drive our new car on the beach, so we had to walk

A shark on the beach

From Pigeon hill we drive to Chaisson to go see the big Shippegan lighthouse.

Road vendor that we got apples from yesterday

we did a quick stop to see the cranberries fields but since it was Sunday, they were no working and we were not allowed to visit.

Now lunchtime, we drove to Shippegan and found a Subway that was open.  We found a spot to have our sandwiches on the boardwalk.  After lunch we walked it to the lighthouse and back.

Crab fishing is a big industry here

The rest of the day was spent driving home with no drive by shooting of pictures.

Miscou and Lameque Island Day 2

Today we are exploring Miscou Island which is connected to Lameque by a bridge. The bridge was constructed in 1996 and before that you had to cross by a cable ferry.

The population island is just a little over 500.

I went for a walk in the morning while Wendy stayed home and enjoyed her tea and read her book in peach and quiet.

Shippegan aquarium behind the lighthouse

Empty eagle nest

Crab boats on the Shippegan wharf

Our cottage is a little bit behind those houses

We drive to the tip of Lameque Island and did a quick stop at the wharf at Petit Shippegan.

Miscou Island Bridge

Herring shaker like my father had but this one had a top on it to stop the fish flying in the air.

Wendy almost got hit when a cormorant that was on a pole above us decided to do his morning job.

A quick drive across the bridge and we stop at the Miscou harbour.  The morning is windless and the reflections on the water are great.

La Terrasse a Steve but it does not look open.

Wendy found a boat that matches her jacket

Next we stop at the interpretive bog boardwalk. The island is mostly bog.  Very interesting and beautiful.

Pitcher plant. One of the few carnivore plant in NB

Our next stop is a tiny church that has no electricity. They use oil lamps when needed. Not regularly used.

A few old tombstones

A tragedy at sea

We finally make it to the tip of the island and visit the lighthouse and the beach area where a couple of fisherman were fishing stripped sea bass. Nothing is open to visit inside or to get something to eat/drink.

A mermaid relaxing on the rocks

We took a break and watch a boat fishing rock crab and also seals in the water

Fog horn, happy it was not foggy

Old fishing boat along the way.

We drove down to Miscou beach and climbed the lookout to take in the views.

Another quick stop to see the Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue church but it is also not open to visit.

We were going to drive to Wilson Point but the road had just been recently chipped seal, so we skipped it.

Our last stop on the island is St Mark's United Church.

Blueberry field along the way

Lots of Vibert family members here

We now cross back to Lameque Island as we have seen most of everything we wanted/had to see on Miscou Island.  We found a small gas station/grocery store and got something to eat for lunch as we did not find any place to get lunch at. We drove to a small beach and had lunch on the beach.

We stopped in Saint Cecile to visit the church which is called the candy church because of the colours inside.

A detour down a side road and we see cottages that we had looked at renting.

We had read about the wood sculpture park but it had said it was closed but decided to take our chance.  It was not open but not closed either, so it was free. Donation box at the exit to drop in something. Mostly geared for kids but still enjoyed it.

One last stop for the day at the Eco-Park in Lameque for a short walk and see a few birds.
