Cape Breton Day 2 Exploring the area

Started off by watching the lobster fishing boats from our cottage. They are so close to shore and fishing the channel. Andre even waved at one and the fisherman waved back. You could see them throwing back the undersized lobsters.

We are scheduled for a boat tour at 5:30PM but if the winds don't die down we will not be going. Fingers crossed.  The forecast calls for the showers to stop and the wind to die down. We will explore the area around our place for now and com back later this afternoon.

Went looking for a lighthouse which we did not find but did find a cemetery. A quick visit.

Next stop is Point Aconi cove. There a small beach called Battlemans but it is not beach weather. This is also where an subsea electricity cable between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. This cable enabled NS to close down the coal generating power plant that is also here.

Lots of them around but they fly so fast in this blowing wind

From here we drove to Aconi Point to see the lighthouse. Stopped to take picture and my favorite hat, souvenir from the Galapagos in 2009, blew off into the water. No way down as I was near a cliff.  We them walked to the lighthouse but did not stay long as you could barely stand up and the wind must have been at least 50KM at this spot. I walked down the beach but did not find my hat :-(

Can't go by a fishing wharf without stopping. I love how they name their boats here and the colours they paint them.

We were told which drive to do for a scenic drive but it turned out to be mostly in the woods with the occasional view of the water. The train used to run along the waterfront and it would have been a great ride to take.

We made our way to Christmas Island and on the way we saw signs for Highland Village which is in Iona which is only a couple ok kms away.  Since we still had a bit of time we decided to visit it. Bonus is Nova Scotia museums are free because of covid. We saved the $11 admission but would have done it either way. This village tells the story when people came over from Scotland.  11 Houses & buildings from when they came over to the late 1800s. Many people in period costumes tell you about the times they are representing. Highly recommended to visit.

We stopped for soup & chowders at a small cafe for lunch as it was now 1:30. We drove home on the south side of the peninsula via Eskasoni. Wendy missed a small part of it as she took an afternoon snooze. A little more interesting than the north side.

Got home around 4:30 and were told that the boat tour was on. Separate blog for the boat tour as today is long enough already. Walked around the property and took a few pictures.

The main house where the office is.
